Unemployment, directly connected to a country's mortality rate
Posted: 26th January 2010
"In the past, we saw people die within 10 years after their job loss. Now, we are seeing them die as early as the same year," announced Harvey Brenner Ph.D.
At the Health Industries Council meeting on March 11, 2009 in Irving, CA; USA, Harvey Brenner, Ph.D. and professor of public health and behavioral sciences at the University of North Texas Health Science Center's School of Public Health, announced new findings that indicate that mortality is directly related to the economy.
The stress of being unemployed causes both physical and psychological issues that may eventually erupt into major medical conditions that easily could have been treated earlier.1
Why is the stress so acute? Is the financial burden and stress the causing factor for those unemployed? So, if those who are unemployed are given money by the government to at least get by, should we see a decreasing rate of stress since there are more support services for the unemployed these days?
Research by Marie Jahoda, a British social psychologist, developed the theory of ‘Ideal Mental Health’ 2. Here she identified five categories vital to feelings of well-being:
1. Time Structure
2. Social Contact
3. Collective Effort or Purpose
4. Social Identity or Status
5. Regular Activity
She determined the unemployed are deprived of all five.
So, let's create the most efficient path to finding people work!
That is not the answer either. Quite a bit of research shows that the ‘dissatisfied employed’ are adversely effected to a similar degree or even to a greater degree than the unemployed.
“The ‘dissatisfied employed’ have remarkably greater psychological issues than even the unemployed.” - Anthony, Harold, Winefield, “Growing Up With Unemployment” 1993.
A radical change needs to take place within the core fabric of our society. An organization, of which I am a part, in Bristol, UK is testing the waters in this area. We are creating a place for people to go where they can be coached AND be in an innovation team assisting local businesses.
