Celebrity Interview with
MELISSA ETHERIDGE  by Coaching Circles Staff Writer
Comments (0)

Recording superstar and Grammy winner Melissa Etheridge, has sold more than 25 million records worldwide. It was most definitely circumstances "beyond chance" that lead Etheridge to motherhood.

In 1992, at an inaugural celebration for President Clinton, Etheridge acknowledged her homosexuality. Her openness and honesty were embraced by her fans everywhere. Together with her life partner of over 17 years, director Julie Cypher, Etheridge is the parent of a daughter and a son, both sired by musician David Crosby.

CC: How did you know Julie was the one you wanted to spend the rest of your life with?

Melissa: That sort of thing creeps up on you. Julie was the assistant director on my first video. At first it's, "Oh my gosh -- she's gorgeous, she's sexy, she's wow!" Pretty soon after a couple years go by, you realize the energy is just right. This works and it's worth doing what it takes to keep it going. If you want to walk side by side through this life together, you work on honesty, communication. You start making plans and then all of a sudden five, six, seven years go by and you realize this is the one. Because you're not looking around.

CC: How do you make sure you retain your identity?

Melissa: That's sort of where we are now. Once you have kids you really are just connected at the hip, so we're trying to make it where all of our gaps aren't filled by each other. And we can fulfill them for ourselves.

CC: What was your first date like?

Melissa: We didn't really have a first date. Ours was a tawdry affair. She was married (to actor Lou Diamond Phillips). She kind of came and saw me on the road and... then we separated from our lives and then came back together. No lovely first date, sorry.

CC: Did you and Julie have a wedding ceremony?

Melissa: No. We have agreed that until it is recognized legally by the state and the country, we're not going to do that. The reason people get married is for legal reasons. We are committed -- every day we are in that life of commitment and working together. But we agreed not to have a ceremony until it was legalized.

CC: What is your most romantic getaway?

Melissa: Gosh -- with two kids, it's anywhere we can be alone. The guest house. We actually love Hawaii and The Four Seasons in New York. We don't have one place. Last week we got away for a night to Two Bunch Palms in Palm Springs.

CC: How do you work through arguments?

Melissa: Relationships are all about not laying blame, keeping it very real. "I feel this way," and "This is what I'm angry about." After 12 years, we have pretty good communication. You can see us in a fight, and it's not pretty, but you can be assured that we will be able to talk to a certain point of agreeing or disagreeing.

CC: Do you have a policy not to go to bed until you resolve a disagreement? Melissa: We had that the first couple years, and then we were like, sleep's much too important to stay up all night. We actually have a rule that we can't bring up issues in bed. Once we are in bed you can't say, "Hey, when you did that today you really hurt my feelings." You have to bring the issue up either before we get in bed or you have to wait until the next day. Because we could sit there for hours. The bed is a place of peace, it's not the place to argue.
