Phoenix Rising

“If you have to go through hell, keep walking.”
~ Winston Churchill

Do you know the story of a mythological creature called the Phoenix? At the end of its life, the Phoenix would build a pyre nest of aromatic branches and spices, set it on fire and be consumed in the flames. After three days the phoenix would rise from the ashes. This is an archetypal story of transformation, death and rebirth.

Business tells a different kind of story. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), 50% of small businesses fail in the first year and 19 out of 20 companies fail in this country within the first five years of opening their doors. I began to wonder about the businesses that almost failed but indeed rose from the ashes of adversity and not only survived, they thrived. What was it about the leaders of these businesses that transformed them from potential failure to great success? When on the brink of extinction, what allowed them to take flight like the phoenix rising up from the ashes?

You can imagine that it would take courage to tell me this story. Our culture is one that does not value losing – only winning. We see it in our idioms – “Second place is first loser.” “Failure is not an option.” “Winning is everything.” Yet, unless we strive to move beyond what we know, there is no opportunity for learning, innovation and true success. A paradox at best – failure can be viewed as an indicator of boldness born out of a deep commitment to excellence. Richard Branson is known to have said, “If you haven't failed at least once, you haven't tried hard enough.” Magazines like Inc. and Fast Company have studied the predictors of entrepreneurial success, and the number one predictor is previous business failure. So, perhaps, if you haven't failed at least once in starting a business, you probably haven't learned enough to succeed.
